Overview

The Educator is responsible for delivery of direct service programming, including, but not limited to on-site and off-site programs for the general public, schools, adults, and scouts as well as special events such as festivals, scout days, and marketing events. The Educator participates in all direct service programming that falls within the purview of the GROW Exhibit.  In addition, the Educator may be required to participate in programming in other areas of the Center, including day camps, gallery programs and on-site evening events.  The Educator will be responsible for all aspects related to program and event/project development and delivery

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of exhibits and programs available throughout the Science Center and present to the public on a regular basis imparting a friendly, positive, proactive and professional image at all times

 

  • Assist the GROW Manager with the development, delivery, evaluation, and maintenance of gallery activities and demonstrations designed to engage visitors, enrich the visitor experience in these galleries, demonstrate scientific and educational principles, and reinforce primary gallery concepts.

 

  • Prepare for programs by purchasing, organizing and collaborating with other departments as needed to develop programming.

 

  • Facilitate programs or assist in the presentation of on and off-site programs, day camps and overnight camp-ins.

 

  • Cross-train and assist with visitor interactions in other galleries, programs or demonstration areas within the institution (such as Amazing Science Demonstrations, Life Science Lab, Discovery Room, LEGO Mindstorms, scout programs, overnights, camps, etc.)

 

  • Attend staff meetings and/or training sessions to achieve gallery objectives, encourage teamwork, strengthen and promote communication, and enhance professional growth.

 

  • Update program curriculum to meet current educational standards and to meet the needs of our clients.

 

  • Provide educational input to other educators and managers with program development, working as part of a team to prepare, develop and evaluate programs.

 

  • Attend all pertinent staff meetings and professional development sessions

 

  • Assist in training and day to day mentoring of volunteers and interns

 

  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

May at time give work direction to volunteer staff or interns related to delivery or execution of a program or event.

Qualifications

Must be a good team player as well as a self-starter and able to work independently. Must meet education and experience requirements. Good interpersonal skills, excellent customer service skills, positive attitude and outlook; ability to work with all ages – early childhood to adults of all ages; ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Must be able to qualify to drive Science Center vehicles.

 

EDUCATION:

Minimum of 2 years of college, bachelor’s degree in education or related field such as Life Sciences, Horticulture, Plant Biology preferred. Experience in inquiry based or hands-on program delivery/teaching.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Good written and oral communication skills. Good skills in writing program curriculum, as required.

 

MATHMATICAL SKILLS: Good.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Excellent reasoning and decision making.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Drivers license required

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to load and unload equipment used in and necessary for program delivery.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Will present programs and participate in events on and off-site and at varied hours, including some nights and weekends. Must be able to work in various weather conditions.  Some programs and/or conferences and/or training opportunities may require overnight travel – must be available for those engagements.
