Overview

Fabricates exhibits and exhibit components as assigned.  He/ She also maintains these and all other exhibits as necessary.  The temporary preparator is responsible for assisting with current traveling exhibit installation and or fabrication of SLSC in-house augmentation exhibit of the current traveling exhibition

Responsibilities

  • Builds, maintains and repairs exhibits based upon verbal and written instructions, blueprints and shop drawings; constructs exhibit prototypes or cabinetry as assigned.
  • Assists in the preparation and installation of temporary traveling exhibits and permanent exhibits including mounting, furniture arrangement, artifact handling, crating and casework installation.
  • Performs routines maintenance for all exhibits including mechanical repair, cleaning, and painting.
  • Responsible for routine maintenance of all carpentry shop equipment including regular cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs; maintains a safe, clean shop environment; supervises any additional staff assigned to the carpentry area.
  • Performs other exhibit-related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

Must have graduated from high school and have three years of museum preparatory training or related experience.  General carpentry and cabinet-making skills essential. Familiarity with technical drawings is required.
