Overview

The Saint Louis Science Center is seeking an enthusiastic individual with excellent writing skills to be responsible for creating STEM-based content for exhibits and program-related materials. As a member of SLSC’s Science department, this individual is responsible for collaborating with the Education, Experience, Marketing and Membership teams to develop interpretive and SLSC-branded content in a team environment. The ideal candidate would have specific interest and knowledge in one or more areas that relate to the science and technology explored and interpreted for audiences at SLSC.

Responsibilities

  • Research and write content that shares STEM-focused, innovative advances for dissemination across the institution.
  • Write interpretive text that supports new gallery designs, exhibit label copy, and educational materials, and as appropriate—apps, podcasts, videos, blog posts, etc.—for onsite, local, regional, and national audiences;
  • Assist the Science Team and act as liaison with the Marketing and Communications Department in developing an institutional “voice” and “personality” for the Science Center;
  • Work cross-departmentally to disseminate STEM content throughout the institution and through external communications while implementing a style standard for language, punctuation, and vocabulary usage, consistent with the Science Center “voice”;
  • Assist the Science + Education + Experience (SEE) division in developing overall concept, scope, and storyline of new galleries, exhibits, and program materials;
  • Coordinate projects that involve reviewing and making revisions or additions to exhibit signage and text in existing galleries and program materials;
  • Work closely with the Interim Director of Science, content experts (STEM practitioners, scholars, hobbyists, and others), and SEE staff to ensure current, accurate, and relevant STEM content-focused text for Science Center exhibits and programs;
  • Assist in the possible recruitment, hiring, and training of interns to support STEM writing, editing, and communications;
  • Participate in other projects that contribute to the overall mission of the Science Center.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Writing, Communications, Journalism, or a similar field Required
  • Master’s degree or certification in Museum Studies or Bachelor’s degree in a science-related field or science education highly desired
  • Experience in museums or informal science education highly preferred
  • Project management experience preferred

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrated (or demonstrable) knowledge of museum label writing
  • Ability to translate scientific concepts, facts, and instructions into copy that is clear, inviting, and engaging
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 2013
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively, in a team environment
  • Detail-oriented and able to meet tight deadlines
  • Organized and able to establish project priorities
