Overview

The Special Exhibitions Assistant is responsible for the delivery of a quality visitor experience in the temporary Special Exhibitions as well as at the GROW Tractor Run, Pulseworks Flight and Motion Simulators, and the VR Transporter Simulator.

 

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of each special exhibition, as well as Science Center operation and procedures, with an emphasis on imparting a friendly, positive, proactive and professional image to the public at all times
  • Understand and interpret exhibition information for the benefit of the visitor
  • Cashiering: Conduct ticket transactions for the exhibition and the simulators as well as all other venues and provide suggestions based on age, demographics and interests; share promotions/combos/specials
  • Facilitate visitor entry into and exit from the exhibition
  • Facilitate demonstrations and activities inside the exhibition
  • Respond promptly to visitor questions, concerns and/or complaints
  • Properly and safely operate the Pulseworks ESP Blue Motion Simulator (requires the staff member to properly explain the ride and safety features as well as operate the machine from a control console)
  • Properly and safely operate the Pulseworks i360 simulator (requires the staff member to explain the ride, teach the rider(s) how to operate the machine, describe safety procedures, physically enter the machine to assist guests with their safety restraints, monitor the riders, and physically manipulate the machine in the case of malfunction)
  • Properly and safely operate the Pulseworks VR Transporter (requires the staff member to explain the ride, explain the safety systems, and operate the ride via the control console)
  • Properly and safely operate mini-tractors and pedal tractors at the Tractor Run at the outdoor GROW exhibition
  • Monitor visitor behavior and assist Security staff in enforcing the basic safety, security and emergency procedures.
  • Ability to work with large groups, including school-age children
  • Perform all other duties as required or assigned

Qualifications

  • Outgoing, service orientated personality
  • Patience, good listening, problem solving and speaking skills
  • Ability to respond effectively and expediently to unforeseen circumstances, changes or emergencies, while dealing with large crowds
  • Ability to perform job duties as part of a team without close supervision
  • Perform cash and credit card transactions in an accurate and efficient manner; basic ticketing system knowledge a plus. Prior cashier experience preferred 
  • Must be available to work varied hours, including weekends, evenings, and holidays
  • Present a clean and professional appearance by adhering to the uniform policy
  • Must be able to absorb and convey information about current Special Exhibitions and other Saint Louis Science Center features

EDUCATION

  • Successful completion of at least 2 years of college—science education/and or early childhood/elementary education preferred
  • Entertainment/theater productions experience a plus
  • Prior customer service experience a plus

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • English necessary, additional languages a plus
  • Good verbal communication skills.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Must be able to stand for prolonged periods
  • Must be able to lift 25-50 lbs
  • Must be able to work in varying weather conditions

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • 12,000 sq. ft. exhibition hall, outdoor agriculture exhibition, public museum setting
