The Compensation and Benefits Manager is responsible for the compensation and benefits program for the Saint Louis Science Center, in order to ensure competitive pay and to oversee benefit offerings.  This position will be part of the Metropolitan Zoo Museum District (ZMD) Human Resources Group, which meets on a regular basis to collaborate HR functions, exchange best practices, etc.


  • Ensure Science Center compliance with federal and state laws, including reporting requirements.
  • Evaluate job positions, determining classification, exempt or nonexempt status, and status and salary.
  • Plan, develop, evaluate, improve, and communicate methods and techniques for selecting, promoting, compensating, evaluating, and training workers.
  • Prepare occupational classifications, job descriptions, and salary scales.
  • Prepare reports, such as organization and flow charts, and career path reports, to summarize job analysis and evaluation and compensation analysis information.
  • Observe, interview, and survey employees and conduct focus group meetings to collect job, organizational, and occupational information.
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining personnel records and handbooks.
  • Administer employee welfare benefits, including group benefits, FMLA, ADA, retirement plan, worker’s compensation, and working closely with insurance brokers and plan vendors.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate benefits.
  • Research employee benefits, health and safety practices and recommend changes or modifications to existing policies.
  • Schedule and manage annual open enrollment process, utilizing online technology.
  • Work with plan vendors and manage monthly invoicing of all welfare plans, ensuring accuracy of enrollments/disenrollment changes.
  • Knowledge of principles, procedures and legal requirements for compensation and benefits, and HR benefits information systems.
  • Excellent communication skills , giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate.
  • Ability to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.


Bachelor's degree OR course study in related field; minimum of 3 to 5 years' work experience required in human resources; must have benefit administration experience; experience with 401K/401A/403B plans .



Usual office work environment. May require occasional evening or weekend work.


Able to move about the Science Center's physical locations



This position has no regular supervisory responsibility.  May occasionally have volunteers or interns to supervise as assigned.
