    At the Saint Louis Science Center our mission is to ‘ignite and sustain lifelong science and technology learning’. We seek to make science fun through informal, interactive learning experiences. The Science Center’s on-site Summer Science Blast Camp excels in creating exciting and unique educational experiences that develop collaborative scientific skills and a passion for life-long science learning.

     

    The Summer Camp Lead directs, supports, coordinates, and monitors the Science Center’s on-site summer camp program. This individual will ensure that program staff have the resources and operational know-how needed to lead an educational, fun and safe educational experience. This individual will supervise and attend to the needs of our campers along with our paid and unpaid staff.

     

    The Summer Camp Lead will work closely with the Science Center’s Public Programs Manager to organize, support and carry-out camp logistics. This job requires a commitment to model responsible behavior fitting a leader who models the established characteristics of an exemplary Science Center employee.

    Responsibilities

    • Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of Summer Science Blast Camp workshops and activities.
    • Study and act as expert on all camp procedures, equipment, and materials used in programming. Work closely with the Public Programs Manager to ensure that all camp procedures and policies are followed and adhered to by camp staff to provide a safe, education, fun, hands-on experience for campers and camp staff.
    • Serve as a role model for campers and camp staff. Demonstrate a friendly, positive, and professional image to campers, parents, visitors and other staff.
    • Manage parent expectations and any issues that may arise including, but not limited to, camper or camp staff behavior issues, parent complaints, etc.
    • Assist camp counselors in planning daily camp schedules and activities.
    • Direct classroom activities that engage and encourage camper participation.
    • Co-lead staff meetings and training sessions with the Public Programs Manager.

    Qualifications

    • Creative, confident problem solver with expertise in resolving issues and communication.
    • Collaborative, team player who is able to follow directions and can demonstrate taking initiative to achieve program learning objectives.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of implementation of inquiry-based informal education practices.
    • Certified in First Aid/CPR. If not previously certified, willingness to participate and become certified prior to camp start.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    • BS or BA in a relevant Science or Education field.
    • 2-4 years of workplace experience teaching and working with children ages 4-16 in either a formal or informal setting.Experience working with children of various physical and behavioral issues a plus.
    • Experience in writing and implementing lesson plans.
    • Previous camp instructional experience such as camp director or camp supervisor is preferred.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    • Ability to work 8 hours or more in a fast-paced environment
    • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
