  • Overview

Do you learn by playing?! Then you belong in the Discovery Room!

At the Saint Louis Science Center, we seek to make science fun through informal, interactive learning experiences. We are a team of educators, entertainers and science enthusiasts. Our expert staff, passionate volunteers, educational and corporate partners all work together to make the Saint Louis Science Center a leader in its field.  The Discovery Room is designed for young children, ages one to eight, and their families, to experience science play together. In this space, children immerse themselves in science play, deepen their understanding of how the world works, and test new ideas. Adults join in these experiences by playing alongside their children while strengthening their own knowledge of science. Staff support this experience through conversations and joining in the play.

The Early Childhood Educator is the heart of the Discovery Room experience. Foster the wonder and joy of science play while engaging with visitors of all ages in the Discovery Room.

Facilitating:  Activate the Discovery Room for successful, meaningful learning experiences. Invite visitors to join in the fun and assist them as needed. Setup and teach programs on- and off-site to groups of preschool through second grade children.

Making Connections:  Make science meaningful to our youngest visitors by helping them and their caregivers connect new ideas with their prior knowledge. Build critical thinking skills through conversations and interactive play.

Animal Care and Exhibit Maintenance:  The Discovery Room’s authentic experiences are enriched by live animals that require routine feeding and habitat maintenance.  Exhibits also need scheduled cleaning and maintenance performed by Discovery Room staff.

Physical Demands:  Science play in this setting requires good stamina and range of motion.  Be prepared to be on your feet most of the day. You will bend, kneel and lift as you work and play.

Cross Training:  Learn the ins and outs of other departments for opportunities and connections beyond the Discovery Room!

Schedule:  Science play can occur any day or time, within or beyond museum hours (9:30 am-5:30 pm). The ability to work weekends and holidays is required to accommodate this need.

Other:  Although we do our best to anticipate the future, other duties may be required as assigned.

A high energy educator who wants to make science accessible to all learners. Must have the ability to interact effectively with diverse audiences, love working as part of a team, and be a lifelong learner.
