  • Overview

    To serve and protect visitors, employees, property and assets of all three properties of the Saint Louis Science Center.  Able to remain calm and take appropriate action as well as maintaining a professional and impartial stance in all safety, security and/or disaster situations encountered. 




    • Patrol assigned areas inside and outside the Science Center campus on foot or vehicle, to observe, caution, address safety/security issues, investigate and report activities to maintain order and protect visitors, staff and property. 
    • Maintain a visible presence while serving an assigned post or patrol. Actively assist visitors in way finding, inside or outside our buildings. 
    • Greet Visitors and converse with them without distraction from security duties. 
    • Perform first line of support to direct visitors and staff to parking lot facilities and buildings. 
    • Visibly screen visitors and staff as they enter and leave the facility. Without distraction from security duties, greet visitors and converse with them at every opportunity. 
    • Respond to emergency situations such as fire, building evacuation, illness, injuries, crimes, natural or man-made disasters and threats, dangerous or confrontational individuals.  
    • Perform emergency 1st Aid, CPR and AED in the absence of an EMT. 
    • Maintain knowledge of the Science Centers' physical layout. Knowledge of all emergency service equipment, including firefighting and first aid equipment. Knowledge of the Security Manual and other instructions. 
    • Perform control room operations, including fire and security alarm monitoring and operating digital CCTV, emergency phone and radio operations as needed. 
    • Prepare incident reports, logs and records. 
    • Provide visitor and staff assistance, including vehicle assistance for jump starts. Provide escort service. 
    • Any other duties assigned by Science Center management staff. 
    • Some required characteristics for a security officer working with the public are; sincere, empathic, friendly, polite, patient, calm, responsive, understanding, willing, unprejudiced, respectful and helpful. 
    • Some required characteristics for a professional security officer are; knowledgeable, honest, trustworthy, alert, assertive, flexible, decisive, confident, proficient, inquisitive, structured, and discrete. 
    • Security officers must also be critical and consequential thinkers, problem solvers, self-disciplined and able to follow directions.



    • Must have or be able to obtain a Private Security Officer License at own cost, unless other arraignments are made and issued by the St. Louis City Police Department or St. Louis County Police Department specifically for Saint Louis Science Center employment.  
    • Certified in CPR, AED, First Aid.
    • Preference given to licensed security endorsements (Mace, Baton, Handcuffs, Etc) 
    • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license/safe record and be able to operate security patrol vehicles. 
    • Able to remain calm, take appropriate action and maintain a professional and impartial stance in all safety, security and /or disaster situations encountered. 
    • Able to use a personal computer.  
    • Have reliable transportation to and from place of employment, 24/7.  
    • Available to work holidays and weekends, 24 hours. Must be able and available to work a varied schedule, including some evening and overnight work; Flexibility to work hours and posts as assigned by the Security Manager and Supervisors.



    High school diploma or GED equivalent, college degree preferred.


    If not certified in First Aid, CPR and AED, certification must be obtained within six months of employment.  Private Security Officer License from St. Louis County or St. Louis City.



    At least two years’ experience in security or related employment. (Security, Law Enforcement or Military experience preferred).



    Ability to communicate effectively in English, oral and written. Demonstrate incident reporting skills.



    Basic high school math skills.



    Possess the skills necessary to identify security and safety hazards and respond.


    Evaluate appropriate courses of action when responding to hazards, incidents and requests for assistance.


    Ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures; ability to understand and follow Science Center policies and procedures pertaining to all aspects of security for the Science Center campus, Collections, visitors and staff.


    Must pass background check



    Security posts are inside and outside, year round in all types of weather. Security shifts can be as long as 10 hours or more and while most work weeks are 40 hours they can vary.  Security posts require coverage seven days a week, including holidays and may occasionally be overnight.  Part-time officers are regulated to approximately 24 to 28 hours per week, or more if approved by the Security Manager.  Off days may not be consecutive depending on security staffing needs.


    Moderate Activity is required. The officer will be required to stand, sit and/or walk and climb stairs throughout a shift.


    Will be required to lift or move equipment. Place a person, at least 100 pounds, in a wheelchair. Lift a child (50 – 75 pounds) and carry in a rescue. Lift and operate safely a 20-pound portable fire extinguisher.
