  • Overview

    The Special Exhibitions Assistant is responsible for the delivery of a quality visitor experience in the temporary Special Exhibitions, Pulseworks Motion, Flight, and VR simulators, outdoor Tractor Run, and within the Saint Louis Science Center lobby.

    Responsibilities

    • Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of each special exhibition, as well as Science Center operation and procedures, with an emphasis on imparting a friendly, positive, proactive and professional image to the public at all times
    • Understand and interpret exhibition information for the benefit of the visitor
    • Cashiering: Conduct ticket transactions for the exhibition and the simulators as well as all other venues and provide suggestions based on age, demographics and interests; share promotions/combos/specials
    • Greet visitors as they enter the Saint Louis Science Center lobby and effectively direct them to points of interest
    • Facilitate visitor entry into and exit from the exhibition
    • Facilitate demonstrations and activities inside the exhibition
    • Inform, train, and sell guests on the Pulseworks VR Transporter, I360 Flight Simulator, and ESP Motion Simulator
    • Monitor, operate, and assist guests with the Pulseworks Simulators
    • Operate and facilitate the outdoor Tractor Run ride (seasonal)
    • Respond promptly to visitor questions, concerns and/or complaints
    • Monitor visitor behavior and assist Security staff in enforcing the basic safety, security and emergency procedures.
    • Ability to work with large groups, including school-age children
    • Perform all other duties as required or assigned

    Qualifications

    • Outgoing, service orientated personality
    • Patience, good listening, problem solving and speaking skills
    • Ability to respond effectively and expediently to unforeseen circumstances, changes or emergencies, while dealing with large crowds
    • Ability to perform job duties as part of a team without close supervision
    • Perform cash and credit card transactions in an accurate and efficient manner; basic ticketing system knowledge a plus. Prior cashier experience preferred 
    • Must be available to work varied hours, including weekends, evenings, and holidays
    • Present a clean and professional appearance by adhering to the uniform policy
    • Must be able to absorb and convey information about current Special Exhibitions and other Saint Louis Science Center features

    EDUCATION

    • College or technical school coursework in the Sciences (Physics, Biology, Chemistry, etc.), Technology, Mechanics, Maintenance, Museum Studies, Anthropology or History preferred
    • Retail, restaurant, or other customer service experience a plus

     LANGUAGE SKILLS

    • English necessary, additional languages a plus
    • Good verbal communication skills.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    • Must be able to stand for prolonged periods
    • Must be able to walk up and down stairs comfortably
    • Must be able to lift 25-50 lbs
    • Must be able to work in varying weather conditions

     WORK ENVIRONMENT

    • 12,000 sq. ft. exhibition hall, public museum setting. Outdoors Spring – Fall in the Tractor Run area of GROW
