  • Overview

    The Research & Evaluation Assistant I conducts data collection, through interviews and observations, for Science Center exhibit and program evaluations and market research studies.  The Research & Evaluation Assistant I also assists full-time department staff in project research, including data entry. 

     

    Essential skills include being comfortable working with the public in a positive and friendly manner and being able to accurately follow detailed instructions for data collection and data entry procedures.  This is a part-time, permanent position, 15-25 hours per week, scheduled 3-4 days per week, including at least one weekend day.

    Responsibilities

    • Conducts interviews/observations in an assigned location for a designated time, recording data according to a specified protocol.
    • Makes judgments about categories of responses according to protocol.
    • Distributes visitor satisfaction rating cards according to a specified protocol.
    • Conducts a positive interaction with visitors and refers them to appropriate Science Center staff or locations to meet other needs.
    • Enters data in spreadsheet computer packages.
    • Attends scheduled department meetings for training on data collection protocols for new projects.
    • Assists department staff with project administration.
    • May conduct traffic pattern surveys or be assigned specific gallery observations.
    • May conduct observations and interviews and write up field notes.
    • May conduct literature searches via internet and libraries to support departmental research projects.
    • May participate in meetings to coordinate data collection and analysis with other evaluation team members.
    • Attends scheduled institutional meetings.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Ability to conduct interviews/observations and record responses according to set protocol with a high degree of reliability and accuracy.
    • Ability to interact with the public in a pleasant and productive manner.
    • Proficiency with computers for data entry for both quantitative and qualitative data.
    • Good analytical skills.

    EDUCATION

    High school diploma required.  College level classes in marketing research, social science research, survey research, museum studies, or other related fields.

     

    EXPERIENCE

    • Experience with data entry into spreadsheet software, such as Microsoft Excel or SPSS.
    • Experience interacting with the public.
    • Ability to understand and follow detailed instructions regarding data collection procedures, including being able to make judgements about categories of responses according to a specified protocol.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS

    • Ability to speak English clearly so as to be easily understood by visitors.
    • Ability to understand and follow detailed instructions given both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to accurately and legibly record visitors’ verbal response to survey questions.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

    Ability to do basic arithmetic calculations.

     

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

    Ability to stand/move quickly around the galleries for a 4-5 hour data collection period.

     

    WORK ENVIRONMENT 

    Data collection primarily occurs in the Science Center’s galleries and lobbies.  Project support activities, such as data entry, occur in an office environment.  Variable work schedule – will include occasional weekends and holidays; may include evenings.
